Peppers are easy to grow in self watering containers and come in a variety of shapes, colours and spice levels.  Peppers produce a plentiful harvest and are relatively disease and pest free. However, Peppers need sun and heat! So make sure you give them the best seat in the house.

Companion Plants

Basil, carrots, cucumbers, eggplant, oregano, parsley, rosemary, squash, Swiss chard, and tomatoes. 

Avoid beans, Brassicas, or fennel

Harvesting

Sweet peppers can be harvested at almost any stage of their development, if you want green peppers, begin to harvest as soon as they've reached their full size. If you prefer yellow, orange or red peppers, wait a little longer for your peppers to turn your preferred colour.

The stalks on your peppers can break easily so be careful or use a pair of scissors when you’re harvesting them. You can increase the storage period by keeping at least 1 inch of stem on your peppers when you harvest. 

If you are harvesting hot peppers, wait for them to turn their full colour, usually red, or in some cases green. Depending how hot the pepper is, you may want to wear gloves when you harvest, especially if the pepper has been damaged in any way that causes it to leech juices. Be careful not to rub your eyes before washing your hands!
